Neph was born with a rare genetic disorder called Wiskott Aldrich syndrome and received a stem cell transplant at the age of 9 months. Doctors believe the harsh chemo he had to receive, caused white matter in his spine to become disrupted, resulting in his inability to stand or walk on his own. He is diagnosed with spastic paraplegia and myelitis.
My son is full of energy and tries very hard to be as independent as he can. With his diagnosis, it’s extremely difficult to navigate riding a bicycle on his own due to his lack of balance and muscle leg tightness and mobility. Having his own bike would encourage him both physically and mentally. We can all enjoy the warm weather together as a family. Also, having access to his own bike would enable him to ‘ride’ with friends and enjoy being the 5 year old he’s meant to be.
