Mazin has NKH and Autism. NKH is short for Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia, it’s an extremely rare genetic disorder. It ranges from mild to severe and there are about 500 children affected worldwide.Mazin has the mild form of Nkh. Essentially his body can not breakdown glycine. Too much glycine disrupts the function of the brain and affect a child’s ability to learn and do typical things, such as eating, sitting, walking, and talking. For Mazin that means speech, developmental delays and behavioral issues. We have worked hard on his gross motor skills but there are many things he can not do independently. He is not aware of the safety and risks of riding a bike independently. While he can ride a tricycle, due to behaviors and just not understanding the dangers, he will attempt to ride in the street or might run into people. He always has to be accompanied by an adult because he does have elopement issues. A side-by-side trike would be perfect, allowing him the freedom to ride a bike with the supervision he needs.
