Fundraising for Phoenix B's Rifton Adaptive Tricycles

Phoenix would be an excellent candidate for an adaptive bicycle because they are fully customizable for a child who needs any amount of extra assistance such as a seat harness, a push bar, loop style handle, and pedal straps. Most of all it will also be a wonderful tool to use with his physical and occupational therapist, and allow Phoenix to participate with his brothers by giggling alongside them as he rides a bike made just for him! This bike can also grow with Phoenix as he gets bigger!

Phoenix is a 2 year old male, who has non-verbal autism, chronic lung disease, sleep apnea, and global developmental delays; he receives in-home physical, occupational, speech, and applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapies. Phoenix has a love for the outdoors, and it has been on his therapy “wish list” to obtain an adaptive bike for him. In good weather, Phoenix’s 2 older brothers love to ride their bikes outside - zooming up and down the street, and Phoenix shows much interest in participating by giggling alongside in his stroller. We’ve already tried an older sibling’s well-loved tricycle so he could participate in bike riding time, but due to lack of trunk support Phoenix is unable to sit on the tricycle steadily, as he is at risk of falling off the seat. He is also unable to pedal with his feet or steer a tricycle with his hands, which makes it very difficult for a caregiver to stoop over him to balance Phoenix on the seat, as well as pushing and steering the bike at the same time. Phoenix would be an excellent candidate for an adaptive bicycle because they are fully customizable for a child who needs any amount of extra assistance such as a seat harness – to keep him securely on the seat, a push bar – to make it easier for a caregiver to push and steer the bike, loop style handle – easier to hold onto, and pedal straps - to hold his feet onto the pedals so they don’t come off and scrape the ground. This type of adaptive bicycle will grow with Phoenix, as in the future we can add on many accessories such as a communication device tray, and a front guide bar should he learn how to pedal on his own. Most of all it will also be a wonderful tool to use with his physical and occupational therapist, and the most exciting part is it has an add on stationary stand so the bike can be used inside in the winter or on rainy spring days!! This will also allow Phoenix to be more integrated, and participate in his older brother’s charity “Trike A Thon” at school this coming up summer!
